A review of Bengal Brasserie by Concerned written on Friday 25th of February 2011
A Belfast restaurant has been fined for a string of food hygiene offences, after a prosecution taken by the City Council.
Mizanur Rahman, who runs the Bengal Brasserie on the Ormeau Road, was fined £1,750.
He was also ordered to pay costs of £69 in relation to six separate hygiene offences detected on 10 February 2010 and 16 April 2010.
It followed a routine inspection of the south Belfast premises.
A number of breaches of food hygiene regulations were detected, including cigarette butts being found in the bases of some staff lockers, and cooked meat being stored in a fridge that wasn't working properly.
The floors were also found to be dirty and the kitchen wall couldn't be adequately cleaned because of exposed cement plaster
Food was not protected from contamination, and raw chicken was being prepared on a worktop where uncovered cooked meat was stored.
Poor hygiene practices were observed with some food preparation being carried out in an unsuitable area.
Council officers confirmed to the court that food hygiene standards at the restaurant have subsequently improved to their satisfaction.
